I fixed this so things don't have to be installed to run make check. It
was an automake problem.

If you run with "--debug", the pattern matching will show, and it'll be
much easier to see why this failed. I don't have an OSF or SGI here to test
on, but this works on Solaris, HPUX 11, and Linux.
