Thanks for your bug report. The latest tar beta (1.13.25) has an
--overwrite-dir option that should give you the behavior that you
want. You might want to give it a try. You might also want to look
at the --overwrite and --recursive-unlink options.
In general, newer tar betas are by default more cautious about
overwriting existing files than traditional tar is; this is because
the traditional behavior led to real problems.
