Huh, I don't understand this.  DESTDIR is the correct way of
installing things, just like using prefix is.  Only that DESTDIR is
prepended to all installation targets.  DESTDIR has nothing to do with
any kind of build time information, as it is only used in the install
targets.  Where prefix (and the rest) may be used to hard code paths
at compile time.
