Oh, definitely not. :)  I appreciate your help a lot. In order to learn I
either have to do it by experience or from someone who spells it out for
me, or both.

This seems so, unfortunately. And out of interest: What would be the
difference when compiling GTK+? They are both linked to X11, anyway? And if
at this system here not, how could it compile?
