Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. One can set environment variables in the 
shell of course. This is done by e.g. "set LANG=it_IT". What I was 
referring to was setenv in the sense of man -s 3 setenv. That's why I tried 
it with the native API call first. But putenv does exist and works.
