Plus Jon's comments:

JK: I don't think the idea is just minimizing the number of clicks - you
can
just use keyboard shortcuts for this. The extra dialog may add extra
value
in terms of options and settings.

AS: I agree about the extra options, not the shortcuts. The average user
knows 1-2 shortcuts at most if any. Most users don't know or use any at
all. That's usually for expereinced or power-users. Even basics like
Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V for Cut-and Paste, or a Ctrl-S to save. In any case,
reducing the number of clicks for essential functions is important IMHO.
It increases eas-of-use and productivity. A good design should always
minimize the amount of work the user has to do: the program is supposed
to do the work, not the user.

However, having seen Oystein's pic, I must admit it looks quite nice and
practical. How about this as a compromise? Leave the button on a
default, but add a local menu to the button. I'm attaching a small pic
so you can see how this was done in Chess Assistant, a program whose GUI
design I had a part in.
