Subject: vcdimager - suggestion
Hello Herbert
Before going to my suggestion I want to tell you the background:
I found MPEG1 standard VCDs due to limited resolution poor.
I than experimented with other resoultions and learned:
MPEG2 is at 2500 Kbit/sec - the maximum for most DVD-Players
not ideal - MPEG1 does a better job at that Bitrate.
But: That leads to XVCD - but XVCD is supported only by
very few DVD-Players.
Then I read: MPEG2 is downward compatible to MPEG1 and gave
it a try:
I encoded an MPEG1-File to 480x575 resolution.
Then i burned it telling NERO (unfortunately no other choice
at the moment) to make a SVCD. Of course: Nero complained
about the wrong format. I set to "allow files that do not comply
to the standard" and burned.
My DVD-Player detected and treated it as SVCD - even so the
file was MPEG1 - and switched to the correct full-screen
resolution.
I tried it with a friends DVD-Player, also not ready for
XVCD but SVCD with double speed - and even his DVD-player
did a good job.
Now that you got the background, you will understand the suggestion:
Please don't check to strict for complying files.
vcdimager stops if it finds non-standard-files.
I would suggest a message saying what was wrong with
the file and the option to continue anyhow.
It would be so nice if I could get rid of my
windows-partition, that I've made only for nero.
Best wishes
Wolfgang
