I did make a mistake forget about the 'R'

cvs diff -u  > whatever.patch

should be enough.

You could even try to:

$ cd /to/certi-buildir
$ make patch

then you should see something like:
Generating patch file ready for review at address@hidden
-- CVS Patch:: Generating patch using CVS...
-- CVS Patch:: Using command     : /usr/bin/cvs diff -u
-- CVS Patch:: Rooted at Workdir : /home/usdtim/Erk/workspace/certi-CVS
-- CVS Patch:: Patch file is :
/home/usdtim/Erk/workspace/certi-CVS/build/patch.diff

after that you can send the patch.diff file.
Better renaming it before sending
