Come, come.

Chris has done ALL the work to make javamail as usable as it is
now. It's great that you are contributing, but you wouldn't have
anything to contribute to without him.

I don't think he's a not-invented-here type either. The logging issue
is a serious one. I'm not aware of Classpath providing an
implementation of java.util.logging yet... but I'm not following it
that closely. If there is one in Classpath you should use it.
