I am a bit confused. In Makefile.am you removed the line
keymapsdir = $(datadir)/${PACKAGE}/keymaps

Once this line was removed it installs the keymaps in
$PREFIX/share/denemo 
instead of  
$PREFIX/share/denemo/keymaps

I also noticed that when launching denemo there is a ~/.denemo/keymaps
dir created but with no keymaps in it. So when I launch denemo it says
Keyboard shortcuts could not be found. So I click on the manage
keybindings. I click on Load standard keybindings and the directory it
opens me up into is my ~/.denemo folder. This should actually be set to:

$PREFIX/share/denemo/keymaps

Load custom keymaps opens up my ~/.denemo/keymaps folder as I would
expect.
