I have been thinking about this - there are some simple signals (e.g.
sustain pedal) which it would be easy enough to exploit, but the pitch
bend control, for example, issues a spew of messages - they would need
to be packaged up into something that could be recognized in the input
and then assigned a meaning. It is the packaging - different users would
want the gestures packaged in different ways (e.g. depending on the
sensitivity/range of their device, the type of activity they were
doing).
Yet the prize for getting this right is very great. I can imagine a
music entry system that could be controlled almost entirely from the
midi keyboard.
For example, the Modulation control looks ideal for altering the
enharmonic choice (for tonal music, i.e. music which is in a key and so
uses a one range of accidentals at a time - such as Eb-G#). You push it
up a bit to go sharper and down to go flatter.
But other customizations could be very difficult to make from a general
mechanism. For example, suppose you wanted to assign two or three keys
at the bottom or top of the midi-keyboard to perform functions - perhaps
you would hold one down while playing something...
We should probably focus on doing some simple things that will yield
enough expressivity for practical purposes.
