If you go into the ~/.denemo-1.0.1/denemorc and change the audio backend to 
none instead of portaudio, does it work then? It does not work for me in ubuntu 
10.04 unless I do this. I have sound issues on that platform anyway. It runs 
fine in Ubuntu 12.04. I compiled it in 12.04. I will recompile it all again in 
10.04 and see if that works for you and test to see if it works in 12.04. This 
may need some massaging to get portaudio to behave correctly. Maybe it compiled 
against my system installed portaudio. If so that would explain why it works in 
12.04. IIRC I compiled it 10.04 and it tried to load the system installed 
portaudio modules instead of the ones that gets packaged with the gub binary.
