A mac style menu has a better usability because it sits on the top edge 
of the screen. So you can move the mouse up very quickly without missing 
the menu (UI Experts would say it has an infinite depth) where a window 
menu requires good pointing skills. And it clutters the screen less (you 
can use only one menu at a time anyway, there is no need to see the 
menus of applications which are currently in the background)

perfectly IMHO would be a solution that combines the NeXT and the Mac 
way: where one can tear off the menu and its submenus from the top of 
the screen (having them in windows then like on NeXT and GNUstep) and 
"dock" the preferred one to the top of the screen.
