Sounds wierd ... and perhaps you were misinterpreting the (quite likely misleading) messages you were seeing.

My guess is that your firewall software was preventing gdomap and gdnc from running.

In order for gdnc to run, you must have gdomap running (this is the nameserver for distributed objects in GNUstep, and all distributed objects servers/clients will normally need to talk to it to find out where other servers/clients are).

GUI applications use gdnc for inter-process notifications.

So I guess you need to get your firewall to allow gdomap to run (and make sure it is running).
Then you need to get it to allow gdnc to run (and make sure that's running).

Only then can you really play with gui applications.
