It's because kernel modules to support the mouse (among others) were
not included in the installer, with the aim of saving resources.
The keys are explained when "setup" runs in the first item of the menu.
The keystrokes that you are looking for are the cursor keys and SPACE.

Login service for X does not come enabled by default, since the support
for your video card may be not supported by the kernel linux-libre.
Visit http://www.h-node.com is a good start to see if your hardware is
compatible with linux-libre. However, the service can be activated,
typing:

  # chmod +x /etc/sv/xdm/run

I'm not sure if I understand this.  If you are trying to edit grub.cfg,
the installer give you the possibility to edit the file. Or later, when
you login as superuser.
