Hi Matias,
great thanks for your reactivity !
So what I was missing was the space bar, thanks.

I do manage to edit Grub.cfg, but I am always worried to mess it up, so
I would like to keep a one-time copy in the setup routine that I know
works, rather than having to check everything 3 time while I type it in.

I just lost everthing again due to a new partition creation. But I
found some info on the Grub recover commands that allowed me to at
least reboot to Windows to change the partitions around again, and
hence recover both Linux but also boot.

I still have to go through the agonies of including my wireless card
which never seems so simple, but I knew that once I chose to go down
the Dragora road !! I did manage to compile open office and my own
variant of Spice on my other machine, so just a question of putting in
the time...

Cheers, and thanks again,
Tim

Sure.

It's because kernel modules to support the mouse (among others) were
not included in the installer, with the aim of saving resources.
The keys are explained when "setup" runs in the first item of the menu.
The keystrokes that you are looking for are the cursor keys and SPACE.
Login service for X does not come enabled by default, since the support
for your video card may be not supported by the kernel linux-libre.
Visit http://www.h-node.com is a good start to see if your hardware is
compatible with linux-libre. However, the service can be activated,
typing:
# chmod +x /etc/sv/xdm/run

I'm not sure if I understand this. If you are trying to edit grub.cfg,
the installer give you the possibility to edit the file. Or later, when
you login as superuser.
