messages while the minibuffer is active

The way that emacs currently deals with messages that get displayed
while the minibuffer is active is very annoying (it basically overrides
the minibuffer to show the message).

How easy would it to use the existing minibuffer `status message'
mechanism (i.e. what `temp_echo_area_glyphs' does) to show messages
while the minibuffer is active?  This seems like it would be far
better from a user's perspective...
