I think we mean:
followed by
a letter of an American keyboard,
i.e. a through z and A through Z.
or more concisely:
followed by
a US-ASCII letter
i.e. a through z and A through Z.
or more loosely speaking:
followed by
an English letter
i.e. a through z and A through Z.
I'd favour this last form of expression - precise enough
to please those few who care, loose enough to let
the ignorant pass by undisturbed.
