Hm.  Could you go down a bit to a lower level?  For example, Gnus
invokes nnimap on IMAP groups, which in turn invokes imap.el to do
the actual network communication.

Maybe you can devise a sequence of function calls from imap.el that
show the slowness?

Are you talking SSL with your IMAP server?
