I was more thinking of using the remote display without SSH, i.e. a 
direct
connection.

Sorry, no.  It could mean anything from 2.0 to 2.4.  If you have the 
include
files, do
% grep VERSION /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gtk/gtkversion.h

or if not,
% ls -l /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-*
