The IMAP backend can be troublesome.

Using Agent does indeed help some.

You might want to just kill the gnutls-cli (or whatever client is
being used to access secure IMAP) program instead of killing Emacs, if
you're using secure IMAP.

Make sure you *don't* use any gnus-demon functions, unless you like
having Emacs hang every N minutes when you're on a bad connection.
Hitting C-g is also more likely to succeed when the gnus-demon
functions are not used.

I seem to have (nnimap-nov-is-evil t) as an option in the (nnimap ...)
part of my `gnus-secondary-select-methods'.  Perhaps that helps in
some subtle way.
