Thanks.. mystery solved. I thought about that but discarded that idea since
the resulting image had "antialiasing" in it... of course that was just what
it looked like as it had an 8 pixel wide coverage encoded into every pixel.

1/8 width sounds suspicious, is it possible that you are generating mono
(1bpp) bitmaps but treat them as 8bpp?
