Yes.

The reason why Adobe doesn't like to have text fields be masks is
probably a problem of the core.

That system fonts can't be used for masks is probably a problem of the
renderer (system fonts most probably are rendered using standard GDI
calls).

Gnash makes (nearly) no distinction between drawing onto stage and
drawing a mask buffer, so everything is possible.

I can speak only for AGG, of course.
