Looking at the build matrix I see that SDL and OpenGL can work together, so SDL using DirectFB could be used, no?

Well, I don't have experience in DirectFB programming, but never is too late to learn something new. due to time constraints in the project I'm involved I think that I will use the X server aproach.

The FB GUI currently only supports the AGG backend. For OpenGL you
have to use the GTK based GUI (and thus you need a X server) or
someone (possibly you) has to write a DirectFB GUI. At least I am not
aware of any other realistic methods to use OpenGL under Linux.
