Oh, and, I admit that the 1/2 in:

        * iii -- speed costs
        ** traversal-with-stat: +SPEED
        ** (maybe-)inode-signature:  +(1/2)SPEED

is arbitrary and does make some difference -- I think it's a decent
enough guesstimate and that the qualitative conclusions about the
issues are stable under stubstituting any of a a fairly wide range of
values in [0..1].
