I think that the build system is generally a better place to solve 'make
dist'. Automake 1.7 has 'make distcheck', which is very very cool. It
will build your program in several different ways (srcdir == builddir,
srcdir != builddir, using DESTDIR=blah), and check all the way that
'make install' and 'make uninstall' do the right thing.
For smaller projects for which Automake would be overkill; sure, I gues
an inventory tool might be sort of OK. But presently I'm forced to deal
with it even though it's largely useless to me.
