According to rms, doesn't work.  This is precisely the way the Aladdin
Ghostscript + GNU readline setup worked.  The FSF legal staff argued
that since the patch is clearly intended to be applied to the GPLed
work, it implicitly creates a derived work.

Not tested in court, so who knows.  (Under threat of court action,
Aladdin backed down; the GNU readline extension is only used by
interactive end users, so it didn't have any positive effect on
Aladdin's revenues.)
