On a related note: there's a little inconsistency in how these messages are
handled in various commands:

grep safe_printfmt_va_list -A2 tla/libarch/*.c

shows some go to a given chatter_fd, others to stdout, some write to one but
flush the other, in some callbacks the arguments are cast to int in some they 
are not.

minor point, but still an inconsistency.
