problems running mudela-book

I'm trying to run mudela-book and it isn't working.  I may have
something wrong with my setup, because neither the simplest example I
can think of, nor the example in Documentation/user works.

On my simple-minded file, mudela-book runs ok, but when I run latex on
the output file, it says:

! Undefined control sequence.
l.5 \preMudelaExample
                      \input 473270656.tex \postMudelaExample
? 
! Emergency stop.
l.5 \preMudelaExample
                      \input 473270656.tex \postMudelaExample
No pages of output.
Transcript written on tunes.log.

With more complicated examples, such as
Documentation/user/latex-mudela-example.latex, I get:
