What happens when you invoke emacsclient directly, do:

  emacsclient +5:3 input/example-1.ly

or so?  If that doesn't work, emacsclient doesn't work.  If it does,
your xdvi does not support the +%l:%c %f, see the xdvi manual page.

You probably need to get a more recent xdvi.
