I finally had to acquaint myself with the Adafruit GPS hat. I had a feeling
that pin 4 was not what I thought it was.

Maybe it seems like semantics but when I talk about pins it means the actual
pin on the device whether a connector or IC. For instance, on the IO
connector, pin 7 is GPIO4, and pin 4 is 5V.

For those that are using the various devices and seeing references to pin 4
they may be confused which means they may connect to 5V rather than GPIO4.

Regarding the Adafruit hat, #4 is the same as GPIO4 on pin 7. In the hopes
of making things simpler, I feel Adafruit's decision to label it this way
only serves to muddy the waters.

If the effort is to create documentation that is meaningful to as many as
possible, then I recommend calling items of interest what they are. If
referring to the hat then #4 is appropriate.

I do agree the GPIO on the hat is the same as the RPi GPIO. They connections
are transferred from one to the other.

Best regards,
Fred

They are one and the same. The HAT plugs into the GPIO pins, power etc.

And as I previously saiid, sure I can cut traces and solder in new wires,
but out of the box, plug it in and it is on pin 4.
