I put together a text file and made it available here:

There are some things I don't quite understand yet, like why some of
the utilities do not build but are just copied from the tarball.
Also why my GPS unit changed device name on a reboot, very strange.
If it is present both before and after the reboot should it not then
retain its device name??

Oh, that's brilliant, Bo.  Many thanks.  I've actually been quite happy with 
the version included with the OS (Wheezy and Jessie), but when (if?) I have 
a few minutes to play I will have a go building from scratch, as I do with 
NTP.  I'm using serial rather than USB, but that had its own problems!

I'm sure your notes will be a valuable resource for others, too.
