I'm stuck with Raspbian because trying for an odd custom OS would
complicate the build recipe beyond what is reasonable for the intended
audience.  And I don't have either the time to debug systemd nor
the inclination to touch that hairball.

There are credible reports that it hogs the processor on a Pi.  This
is bad when you are trying for minimum, controlled latency.

Which makes that advice I can't act on.
