GTK+ is better maintained than the gnome libs. The reason this process
of moving the useful bits into GTK+ is because the bar is higher -- it
takes time to get most things to the point that the maintainers will
accept. See e.g. GVFS, which has been Alex Larsson's primary job for
going on a year now and still isn't ready. See

Even if your evaluation were correct, it would not then be possible to
remove anything from GTK, because it is stable :)
