The CVS-versions of gnuplot (when compiled with the mouse option) support
zooming with a mouse and show the coordinates of the mouse on the
gnuplot window.
One alternative plotting program I know of is grace and the Octave
bindings by Jean-Marc Valin, which were posted to Octave sources in about
1999. The postscript output quality of grace is superior to gnuplot (IMHO)
so it is worth checking out, though I remember having to tweak the Octave
bindings a bit to get it working.
And of course there's also pgplot.
