[Help-tar] Correct use of --directory

Could someone please explain to me the correct use of the --directory
tar parameter.

When I try to use it I get errors. These errors appear to relate to the
current directory instead of the directory specified by the --directory
parameter

Changing the current directory instead of using the --directory
parameter seems to work ok

Please find an example below:-

address@hidden factory]# ls
configurations factorydefault.tar.gz
address@hidden factory]# ls configurations
etc tmp usr var
address@hidden factory]# tar -cz
--file=/tmp/ampbackups.factorydefault/configurations.tar.gz
--directory=configurations *
tar: configurations: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: factorydefault.tar.gz: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
address@hidden factory]# cd configurations
address@hidden configurations]# tar -cz
--file=/tmp/ampbackups.factorydefault/configurations.tar.gz *
address@hidden configurations]#

Best Regards
Nick
