[igraph] Algorithm for maximal.cliques in R

I am running some comparisons of network analysis packages and am curious as to how igraph is calculating maximal cliques in R?  Is this function calling C or Fortran, or is the implementation in R?  If in R, what is the basic process of the algorithm?
