Paul: did you rerun perl Makefile.PL, before trying to remake? I don't know if
that will help.
I just looked at how my install went under Perl5.8 and noticed that my
diagnostics differed at this point:

Mine looked like:
cc -c -Dbool=char -DHAS_BOOL -I/usr/local/include -Wall -O2
-DVERSION=\"\" -DXS_VERSION=\"\" -fpic
"-I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i586-linux/CORE" connect.c
which emitted no warnings, and went on its merry way. Note the difference here
is I'm using cc instead of gcc as a C compiler. I wouldn't think this would be
a significant difference though. If you have cc on your system, and want to
try compiling with it instead of gcc try this:
perl Makefile.PL CC=cc
make
