I thought we had settled on \functionOn and \functionOff (e.g., \sustainOn and 
\sustainOff).
So we should have \hideNotesOn and \hideNotesOff, right? Then \hideNote could 
stand for "\once \hideNotesOn".
That seems clear to me.
