The one we have for LilyDev is:

address@hidden ~/lilypond-extra/patches (master)$ fontforge --version
Copyright (c) 2000-2012 by George Williams.
Executable based on sources from 19:53 GMT 20-Mar-2012-D.
Library based on sources from 13:48 GMT 22-Feb-2011.
fontforge 20120320
libfontforge 20110222

---

Bearing in mind that LilyDev (at least the one I built for general distribution which still uses an old version of Ubuntu 10.04 - Lucid) required me to download and install this newer version than use the one that comes with the distribution.

Seems the one you have is still old.

If you search the lists somewhere you can find this discussion why we wanted to upgrade fontforge.

I know thw CG still says

--snip--
FontForge (20060125 or newer; 20100501 or newer is recommended; must be compiled with ‘--enable-double’. Failure to do so can lead to poor intersection calculations and poorly-rendered glyphs.)
--snip--

So either it's this --enable-double thing or you need to use a newer font forge.
