For the sake of moving on…

As to:
>paint this as the fault of the developers

I do not consider the lack of skyline-quantizing to be a developer's fault,
and have never blamed anyone for anything on this board. I have been and
continue to be grateful for this program as found.

As to:
>Was it a huge deal or not?

I miss my youth every day. But, considering the joy of continued existence,
it's not a huge deal.

Similarly, I miss quanting the slur skylines. But, considering it's one
commented-out line in a set of style and definition files totaling 10,067
lines (at the moment), it's not a huge deal.

Yes, on many pages, there are one or two instances of an object that would
be more gracefully positioned near a slur if we had finer control. But,
considering LilyPond allows (because of the people who work on it) so many
amazing things to happen with reasonable effort, it's not a huge deal.

Your preference for adjusting the shelf width makes excellent sense. If the
other contraints allow such an option, that will be un bel dì! (and again,
Thank you!)

It has not been my intent to rattle the cages; my apologies for any grief.
