GCC give the same errors as G++. The midi libraries aren't the first
ones to compile, so *some* of the subdirs are working OK. I don't
really need midi output anyway, so if there is an easy way to just
disable that bit I'd be fine  doing just that.

When I'm looking for the culprit of a problem, my primary thing is to
look for what is different. As none of the makefiles for all the
dependencies gave me that problem, seeing this 'stepmake' thing [the
obvious difference at first] is why I e-mailed this list.
