That would imply something which your example doesn't have: that the second ending is not always followed by the neigboring measure and/or that the neigboring measure is not always preceded by the second ending. To simulate the second case, put \bar ".|" before the g . AFAIK Lilypond is very strict about this side-effect of barlines. Up to 2.11.38 there used to be a bug in the barline code which provided a loophole for changing the appearance while keeping the side-effect.
