Hi, Kieren,

thanks for the suggestion; I did not see the \put-mm definition before, 
and it has it's place now in my snippet list.
For this very problem, though, it's just a change of scale; the \vspace 
amount is not "arbitrary" anymore now that I found out the *3 
multiplier.  To specify a mm scale amount for the negative padding of 
bottom-system-space requires a similar definition as \put-mm, so it does 
not really matter where to do this work.
