Subject: timing false in one staff only?

Hi all

I want a staffgroup with:

*top is a reduction of some music

*bottom is a line of notes - like a series

I don't want the bottom staff to synchronize with the top (ie I want the notes to be evenly spaced, regardless of what's going on in the top staff)

I can get rid of the time signature, barlines etc no problem - i just can't get timing = false in the one staff

any ideas?
