Here is a command that manually shifts the note column,
\once \override NoteColumn #'force-hshift = #xx,
"xx" is the number, positive for to the right, negative to the left. You might
have to play with the size of the numbers to get what you want.

Thanks, but I meant more technically. Is there anything more, a voice does than
setting those directions and shifts? If I only want to set the mentioned
directions but no shifts. Is it better to use voices and turn the shifts off or
not to use them and set the directions?
