Hi Devin,
the use of parentheses is somewhat special:
don't think of them as a pair of parentheses. :-)
An opening parenthesis after a note indicates the beginning of a slur, a
closing parenthesis means the end of a slur.
So, in your second example the slur ends on the c'8 whereas in your first
example the closing parenthesis doesn't follow a note.
