Wouldn't something like
skipper = \lyricmode { _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ }

\tempo 4=90

\addlyrics { \chorus \firstVerse }
\addlyrics { \skipper \secondVerse }

work? where \skipper has a matching number of syllables to \chorus.
