This is a perennial problem with systems built by
definitions on top of a kernel that end users are
not expected to know about. When something goes
wrong, the error message is expressed in the terms
of the kernel, rather than the end-user abstractions.
If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I would
love to hear about it. I'm expecting the same
problem to arise in Nonpareil, although there at
least when you are using the system interactively
the failure will just be of the most recently
attempted update, which can trivially be rolled back.
I only know one general strategy at the moment, which
is to design the system so that there are no errors
of that kind. This is not possible in Lout because
of the lack of a proper type system. Nonpareil will
at least have that.
