Could you please try the attached one which introduces a customizable
variable "with-backslash-prefix"?  The default value is 0, so it works
as previous.   When you customize the variable to 1, it should work as
your new idea.

I feel you worry too much about backward compatibility though. Several times when I've updated software (windows, ubuntu, android - even gmail), there have been radical (mostly positive) changes​ - it's all right - users can accept that.

Besides, users are smart enough to figure out why neq does not produce ≠ anymore by looking at the mim file - or they can come here and complain. Users who are bent upon using the old system are free to keep the older version of the mim file or flip the variable.
